Swift shared her thoughts on Instagram, mentioning she had watched the debate and researched both candidates. She emphasized her confidence in Harris by writing, "I think [Harris] is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos," to her more than 280 million followers.
She remarked that Harris, along with her running mate Tim Walz, would strongly advocate for issues including LGBTQ+ rights and in vitro fertilization, which she believes need resilient support.
Following her endorsement, Swift humorously signed off her post as "Childless Cat Lady," nodding to a past derogatory comment made by Donald Trump's running mate J.D. Vance, who in 2021 described the Democratic Party as being directed by “a bunch of childless cat ladies.”
Swift, who endorsed Joe Biden during the 2020 elections, had previously criticized Donald Trump for exacerbating racial tensions during his presidency. Recognized as last year's top-selling recording artist and the first to become a billionaire mainly through her music career, Swift holds significant influence, especially among younger demographics.
However, the Trump campaign responded to Swift's endorsement by labeling it a testament to the Democrats becoming a party for the affluent. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson, highlighted, "There’s many Swifties for Trump out there in America."
Following her political declaration, there was a noticeable decline in Swift's social media followers.
Swift's candid style in her music didn't go without critique. C.J. Pearson, co-chair of the Republican National Committee's youth advisory council, commented on X, hinting at Swift's personal life influencing her public decisions: "She has built an entire career on her inability to choose the right man. Now, she wants us to trust her to choose our next President. Yeah, I’ll pass," he stated.
