Former White House strategist Steve Bannon stated that he is assisting the 47th president in finding a way to circumvent the constitutional two-term limit.
Bannon claimed that President Donald Trump intends to run again in 2028 despite the restrictions outlined in the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution, which declares that “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” As an early supporter of Trump and a leader of his 2016 election campaign, Bannon believes that it is possible for Trump to secure a third term.
“I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run again in 2028. I’ve already endorsed President Trump,” Bannon shared during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo on Wednesday.
“A man like this comes along once every century if we’re lucky. We’ve got him now. He’s on fire, and I’m a huge supporter. I want to see him again in 2028,” he added.
When questioned about how Trump could bypass the constitutional ban on a third term, Bannon responded, “We’re working on it.”
“I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives, let’s say that. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is,” the former chairman of Breitbart News mentioned.
“We’ve had greater longshots than Trump 2028. We’ve got a lot of stuff we’re working on. We’re not prepared to talk about it publicly,” he added.
When asked if he was suggesting a violent revolution or insurrection, Bannon clarified, “No. We are big believers in democracy.” He indicated that Trump supporters aim to activate their voting base, which includes low-propensity and low-information voters.
Trump has often joked about potentially serving more than two terms. In January, he told supporters in Nevada, “It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not once but twice or three times or four times.”
Earlier in the year, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed an amendment to the Constitution that would permit presidents who haven’t served two consecutive terms to hold office for three terms in total. “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” Ogles stated in January.
Trump was first elected in 2016, defeating former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He ran for reelection in 2020 but lost to former Vice President Joe Biden. Last year, he secured his second term by defeating Biden’s chosen successor, Kamala Harris.
The two-term limitation was established in the Constitution following Franklin D. Roosevelt's unprecedented four-term presidency, as prior to his tenure, US presidents typically served one or two terms.
