‘A lot of people know’ the identity of Nord Stream bombers, says Trump
The US president has expressed skepticism regarding claims that Russia was responsible for the destruction of its own pipelines.

According to US President Donald Trump, there is no need for an investigation to determine who was behind the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. While he did not specify a suspect, he suggested that he does not accept the idea of Russian involvement.

In September 2022, three of the four Nord Stream pipelines, designed to transport Russian gas to Germany and Western Europe, were severely damaged by explosions in the Baltic Sea.

On Tuesday, a reporter from libertarian financial blog ZeroHedge, which has been allowed to attend White House press briefings under the current administration, reminded Trump of his past dismissal of the prevailing Western narrative claiming Russia detonated its own pipelines. The journalist then asked if the president intended to launch an investigation to identify the true perpetrators of the attack.

Trump replied, “If you can believe it, they said Russia blew it up. Well, probably if I asked certain people, they would be able to tell you without having to waste a lot of money on an investigation. But I think a lot of people know who blew it up,” although he did not go into further detail.

ZeroHedge interpreted Trump's remarks as suggesting that he possesses classified intelligence that reveals the identity of those responsible for the Nord Stream destruction. The outlet further asserted that this statement “should put the ‘Russia destroyed its own vital and economically lucrative pipeline’ storyline to rest.”

In early February 2023, investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reported that then-President Joe Biden had allegedly ordered the destruction of Nord Stream. A source cited by Hersh, a Pulitzer Prize winner, claimed that explosives were planted at the pipelines by US Navy divers months prior, during a NATO exercise named ‘Baltops 22’. The White House dismissed the allegations, labeling them as “utterly false and complete fiction.”

Senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have previously suggested that the United States could be responsible for the Nord Stream explosions. They argued that the US had both the capability to execute the operation and the most to gain, as the attack hindered Russian energy supplies to the EU and prompted a shift to more costly US-supplied liquefied natural gas.
