Russian team invests more than $31 million in Brazilian soccer player
Zenit St. Petersburg has officially signed Brazilian winger Luiz Henrique from Botafogo in a transfer deal that sets a new record in Russian football.

The club announced that the 24-year-old attacking midfielder has inked a four-year contract with the option for an extension. Henrique has already joined Zenit’s training camp in Qatar, where he successfully completed his medical exams.

Reports indicate that the transfer fee for Henrique ranges between €30-35 million, making it one of the five most expensive transactions in the history of the Russian Premier League. Notably, Zenit has acquired eight of the ten most expensive players in Russian football, including Malcom from Barcelona, Hulk and Bruno Alves from Porto, Axel Witsel from Benfica, Yuri Alberto from Internacional, Leandro Paredes from Roma, and Portugal's Danny from Dinamo.

Henrique played a pivotal role in Botafogo’s recent successes, contributing to both domestic and international achievements. His standout performances in the Brazilian league and Copa Libertadores earned him the title of South America’s Best Player in 2024, making him a highly sought-after figure in the transfer market.

As part of the agreement, Zenit midfielders Wendel and Artur are set to join Botafogo to bolster the Brazilian squad. Wendel's move will finalize after the current Russian season, while Artur will transition to Botafogo immediately.

The transfer is anticipated to ease financial pressures on Olympique Lyonnais, another club owned by Botafogo's owner, John Textor. Lyon has been under scrutiny from French football authorities, and the proceeds from Henrique’s sale are expected to assist in stabilizing its financial situation.
