Russian Performer Receives BAFTA Nomination
Yura Borisov is in the running for the "best supporting actor" accolade for his performance in ‘Anora.’

The Russian actor has received a nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the film ‘Anora,’ directed by American filmmaker Sean Baker.

This announcement was made on BAFTA’s official website on Wednesday. In addition to Best Supporting Actor, ‘Anora’ has garnered nominations in four other categories: Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.

The film tells the love story of a Brooklyn sex worker named Anora and the son of a Russian oligarch. When they marry, the young man’s family endeavors to separate them. In the movie, the 32-year-old Borisov portrays Igor, a henchman for the groom’s family.

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, where it was awarded a Golden Palm. Since then, Borisov has received over a dozen nominations for his role, including from the US Screen Actors Guild, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and the Gotham Awards.

Previously, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for ‘Anora,’ competing for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role’ against Denzel Washington for ‘Gladiator II’ and Edward Norton for ‘A Complete Unknown.’ Kieran Culkin took home the award for his performance in ‘A Real Pain.’

The BAFTA winners will be revealed at a ceremony on February 16.

Borisov, a graduate of the Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theater School in Moscow in 2013, began his film acting career in 2010 and has since appeared in nearly two dozen films, primarily in Russia. He won Russia’s Golden Eagle Award for Best Leading Actor for his role in ‘The Bull’ in 2021 and received a nomination for Best Actor from the European Film Awards for his performance in the Finnish film ‘Compartment No.6.’
