22 Additional Medal Events to Feature in LA 2028 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee's Executive Board has given the green light to the event program and athlete quotas for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, revealing on Wednesday that the Games will feature 22 additional medal events compared to Paris 2024.

The LA28 program will showcase a total of 351 medal events with a corresponding athlete quota of 10,500. This includes an extra 698 athlete spots allocated for five sports — baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash — as proposed by the LA28 Organizing Committee.

In a historic move, the IOC announced that all team sports will have an equal number of women's teams as men's teams for the first time. Gender equality played a significant role in determining the athlete quotas and the number of events. The initial sports program outlines that there will be 5,333 female athletes compared to 5,167 male athletes.

LA28 will also enhance mixed-gender events across various disciplines, including archery, athletics, golf, gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint, and table tennis.

Notably, swimming will feature men and women competing in the 50m backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke events. In rowing, women's solo, men's solo, and mixed double sculls will make their debut in coastal beach sprint.

Basketball 3x3 will see an increase in participating teams from eight to 12 per gender at LA28. Meanwhile, in sport climbing, boulder and lead events will now be held as separate medal events, providing new opportunities for athletes to excel.

The IOC also noted that 24 out of 31 Olympic International Federations had requested changes to their event programs compared to Paris 2024. A total of 46 new event requests were made, with six potentially replacing existing events, resulting in a net total of 40 additional events requested. Overall, 772 extra quota spots were sought for the initial sports and event program dedicated to 10,500 athletes.

Finally, the IOC approved the inclusion of boxing at LA28 in March 2025, bringing the total number of sports in the program to 31.
