Fresh Talks Held Between U.S. and Russia in Saudi Arabia
U.S. and Russian delegations engaged in another round of discussions in Saudi Arabia on Monday, focusing on a potential resolution for Ukraine and a ceasefire in the Black Sea before pursuing a broader agreement.

This latest round of talks follows a meeting between representatives from the United States and Ukraine that took place in Saudi Arabia on Sunday. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump conducted separate phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to the White House, the primary goal of the discussions is to establish a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea to facilitate the unhindered flow of shipping, even though the region has not seen significant military activity in recent months.

"This is primarily about the safety of navigation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked, emphasizing that an earlier agreement concerning Black Sea shipping, brokered in 2022, failed to meet Moscow's expectations.

The U.S. delegation is headed by Andrew Peek, a senior director at the White House National Security Council, and Michael Anton, a senior State Department official, as reported by local media outlet Al Arabiya News.

The Russian side is represented by Grigory Karasin, chair of the Federation Council's Foreign Affairs Committee and a former diplomat, alongside Sergei Beseda, an adviser to the director of Russia's Federal Security Service.

Karasin was quoted by the Interfax news agency, stating during a break after nearly three hours of discussions that consultations were progressing "creatively" and that both sides had addressed issues considered "irritants" in their bilateral relations.

Trump has indicated overall satisfaction with the progress of the talks and has praised Putin’s involvement in the negotiations. On Saturday, he remarked that efforts to curb further escalation in the conflict were "somewhat under control."

Despite this, key European powers remain doubtful about Putin's willingness to make substantial concessions.

On Monday, the Kremlin reiterated that Russia is still observing a 30-day moratorium on assaults against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, a commitment that Putin made to Trump last week, despite Kyiv's ongoing strikes against Russian energy facilities.

Ukraine has stated that it would consent to the pause only if a formal agreement were signed, a condition Moscow denies violating.

According to Agence France-Presse, Ukraine anticipates meeting with U.S. officials on Monday to further discuss a potential ceasefire following the round of negotiations between Russian and American representatives.

“We are, so far, waiting for the outcome of the meeting between the United States and Russia. Based on that, we will have another meeting with the United States," a senior Ukrainian official, who requested anonymity, was quoted as saying by AFP. The official added that discussions were planned for "today."
