Prosecutor in Trump case resigns
US Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw two federal cases regarding President-elect Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents and his interference in the election results, has resigned after submitting his final report. This information was revealed in court documents filed on Saturday.

In a recent motion, the prosecution urged District Judge Aileen Cannon to refrain from extending her injunction, which temporarily prevents the release of a segment of Smith’s report related to the classified documents case against Trump. Smith’s resignation from the US Justice Department was mentioned in a brief footnote within the filing.

“The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and separated from the Department on January 10,” the footnote stated.

Judge Cannon is overseeing the case involving the mishandling of classified documents against Trump. Her ruling to block the release of Smith’s findings will remain in place until Monday.

According to other court documents disclosed on Wednesday, Attorney General Merrick Garland is planning to publicly release the portion of Smith’s report concerning Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 US election.

Smith was at the helm of two out of four criminal cases initiated against Trump following his initial presidency. The first case was dismissed by Cannon in July of last year, while DC District Judge Tanya Chutkan terminated the second case in November, citing legal immunity granted to a sitting US president. Neither case proceeded to trial.

Smith’s resignation occurs just ten days before Trump is set to take office on January 20. The incoming president has indicated that he would dismiss Smith “within two seconds” of taking office.

Trump has consistently claimed that the charges against him are unfounded and “lawless.”

On Friday, Trump was sentenced in the New York 'hush money' case. While the verdict does not entail any fines or incarceration, it designates him as a felon under US law.
