Routh, a 58-year-old man, was apprehended on a Sunday afternoon. He was allegedly concealed in the underbrush at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, ostensibly waiting for Trump's arrival, when Secret Service agents engaged after spotting him.
Following the incident, deputies intercepted Routh along a nearby highway and apprehended him smoothly.
The publicly released segment of the body cam footage, lasting only 18 seconds, depicts deputies instructing Routh to walk backwards towards them while he holds his hands up and a t-shirt over his head.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw has also revealed images displaying where Routh was hiding, which included an "AK-47-style" rifle equipped with a scope, a GoPro camera, and two backpacks loaded with ceramic tiles on a nearby fence.
During a press conference, US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Markenzy Lapointe, clarified that the firearm found was an old "SKS-style" rifle which had its serial number removed.
Routh faces charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing a firearm with an altered serial number, both are federal offenses.
Routh's criminal history includes a 2002 conviction for possessing a weapon of mass destruction, identified then as a fully automatic machine gun. His arrest at that time followed a prolonged standoff with law enforcement in North Carolina.
Subsequently, Routh moved to Hawaii and actively participated in various contemporary political issues. In 2022, he publicly supported Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, pushing for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising funds for the Ukrainian military.
Routh also authored a book in 2023 named ‘Ukraine’s Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen – Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the end of Humanity’, where he articulated his hope for someone to assassinate Trump, referring to him as “brainless” and “a retarded child.”
Trump, who had previously had a narrow miss from an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, issued a statement thanking the Secret Service for their professionalism. He also attributed the radicalization of individuals like Routh to the rhetoric of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
