The victim, a 14-year-old boy, was identified by police spokesman Rainer Dionisio, who stated that the motive for the attack is still unclear and the investigation is ongoing. “A man randomly attacked passers-by with a knife,” said Dionisio.
Reports indicate that the assailant stabbed five people near the Drau Bridge in Villach before being thwarted by a food delivery driver who hit him with a car. Some of the injured individuals sustained serious injuries, while others suffered minor wounds, as reported by Austrian national broadcaster ORF. The police also noted that a second perpetrator might still be at large.
Eyewitnesses reportedly claimed that the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the attack. Unverified images circulating online appear to show the man being confronted by an armed policewoman, with him smiling and raising his index finger—the gesture often associated with the Muslim declaration of faith, which has been adopted by some Islamic radicals.
This incident occurred just two days after a car-ramming attack at a trade union demonstration in Munich, Germany, where a toddler and her mother died and 37 others were injured. Authorities arrested an Afghan asylum seeker in connection with that incident, suspecting him of intentionally driving into the crowd, potentially for hardline Islamist reasons.
