Bloomberg reports anticipated Putin-Trump summit this month
Senior US officials are reportedly set to meet with a Russian delegation in Saudi Arabia next week to pave the way for a forthcoming summit.

According to Bloomberg, which cited unnamed officials, President Vladimir Putin of Russia and his US counterpart Donald Trump might meet in Saudi Arabia by the end of this month. Similarly, PMG has reported that several senior US officials will travel to the kingdom to prepare for the summit.

These developments follow a recent phone conversation between Trump and Putin, marking the first known direct interaction between the two leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022. The presidents agreed to keep the lines of communication open and to arrange in-person meetings in a third country as well as future state visits.

After his call with Putin on Wednesday, President Trump told reporters that he and the Russian leader would “probably” meet in Saudi Arabia.

In a Saturday article, Bloomberg suggested that the US delegation likely includes national security advisers aiming to secure a date for the high-level meeting before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins on February 28 this year.

PMG echoed this sentiment, reporting that National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Steve Witkoff, Trump's Middle East envoy, are expected to travel to Saudi Arabia soon. However, their special envoy for Ukraine-Russia talks, Keith Kellogg, will not be attending.

PMG quoted Texas Republican Representative Mike McCaul, who confirmed the composition of the US team. The media outlet noted that “there are no plans for representatives from other major European powers to join the talks,” and Bloomberg reported that European officials have not been informed of the discussions.

Regarding Ukraine, Bloomberg mentioned that while Kyiv’s representatives “are expected” to attend the Saudi meeting, “they also don’t appear to be fully in the loop on the preparations.”

Additionally, Fox News reporter Nana Sajaia, citing an unnamed senior Ukrainian official, stated in a post on X that the “Ukrainian side was ‘neither invited to, nor informed about’ coming U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia.”

On Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian and US leaders had agreed to meet first in a third country, likely followed by official state visits. He noted that while “Saudi Arabia indeed cropped up” in their discussions, “no decision has been made as to where [the meeting] will take place.”

In response, Riyadh expressed on Friday its welcome for holding the summit on its territory.
