Musk Claims “Multi-Trillion Gap” in US Government Spending Regarding DOGE
Approximately $4.7 trillion in federal payments remain untraceable due to the Treasury's lack of enforcement regarding a tracking code.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has revealed a concerning shortfall of nearly $5 trillion in US federal spending that has not been accounted for. DOGE contends that Treasury records have rendered some payments untraceable.

Since the inauguration of President Donald Trump on January 20, DOGE has been actively pursuing budgets and spending audits, alongside job reductions across federal agencies, with a goal to cut government spending by $2 trillion by 2026.

The department, which is led by the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has noted that the Treasury Access Symbol (TAS), intended to indicate the account associated with the funds, was missing from various payments made by the department.

“In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible,” DOGE stated on Tuesday in a post on X.

The agency added, “As of Saturday, this is now a required field, increasing insight into where money is actually going,” while expressing gratitude to the US Treasury for recognizing the optional field.

Musk shared the discovery on X, which he owns, praising the announcement with the remark, “major improvement in Treasury payment integrity going live.” He acknowledged the “nice work” resulting from the collaboration among DOGE, the Treasury, and the US Federal Reserve.

“Major improvement in Treasury payment integrity going live! This was a combined effort of @DOGE, @USTreasury and @FederalReserve. Nice work by all,” he tweeted on February 17, 2025.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service, part of the Treasury, reports that TAS codes categorize all financial transactions submitted to the Treasury and the Office of Management and Budget.

Last week, DOGE launched an official website to monitor the size of the federal workforce and track regulatory numbers, announcing an estimated $55 billion in savings since its inception.
