Journalists Expelled from Meeting of German and Chinese Foreign Ministers, According to Reports
Annalena Baerbock, the German Foreign Minister, has accused China of exacerbating the Ukraine conflict through alleged support for the Russian military.

Reports from the newspaper Handelsblatt indicate that German journalists were removed from a meeting between Baerbock and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Monday. During the discussions, Baerbock reiterated Berlin's stance that Beijing is supplying weapons, including drones, to Russia.

Following the meeting, Baerbock described the talks as “clear in content and friendly in tone,” while emphasizing her assertion that “drones from Chinese factories and North Korean Troops” are “attacking peace in the middle of Europe” and endangering its “central security interests.” Although she made these claims, she did not provide supporting evidence for her assertion regarding drones, which China has consistently denied.

The criticism reportedly led to Chinese security forces ejecting the German press from the meeting, which then continued without public access. There was no subsequent joint press conference or statement issued.

Before her visit to Beijing, Baerbock had previously condemned China's alleged role in supporting Russia and urged the international community to increase pressure on the Chinese government to facilitate a resolution.

In a related context, she mentioned last month that she might impose sanctions on China based on unverified claims about a factory in China producing drones for Russia.

China has rejected accusations of supplying drones to the Russian military, labeling them as “baseless speculation and vilification,” and asserting that it “handles the export of military products prudently and responsibly.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian remarked, “We have never provided lethal weapons to any party of the conflict, and strictly control the export of military and dual-use drones in accordance with laws and regulations.”

During the meeting with Baerbock, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement noting that Wang "comprehensively and systematically elaborated China’s position of being committed to peacemaking and promoting talks." He also highlighted the necessity for Germany and China to cultivate their relationship based on mutual respect and understanding, asserting that the ties between the two nations should not be influenced by external parties and are not directed against any other countries.
