Moscow claims Western media overlooks Kiev's alleged war crimes in Kursk Region
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has asserted that Western media outlets are failing to provide balanced coverage regarding alleged atrocities committed by Ukrainian forces in occupied Russian territory.

Peskov accused the Western press of deliberately neglecting reports of atrocities in Russia’s Kursk Region. He condemned the media for its lack of balanced reporting in response to an inquiry from TASS concerning a purported massacre in the newly liberated village of Nikolayevo-Daryino. The spokesperson criticized the coverage for overlooking these significant incidents.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that almost all male residents of the village near the Russian-Ukrainian border were killed after Ukrainian forces took control during a cross-border offensive in August 2024. According to the ministry, the residents were held hostage for over six months until the settlement was recaptured by Russian forces on January 27.

Despite the gravity of these allegations, Peskov noted that the Western media has generally chosen to remain silent. “They are not willing to provide balanced, truthful information even on such monstrous atrocities,” he remarked, highlighting a wider trend of selective reporting on the ongoing conflict.

Russian officials suggest that similar crimes may have taken place in other villages within the Kursk Region. Rodion Miroshnik, a senior diplomat assigned to investigate alleged Ukrainian war crimes, informed RIA Novosti that Ukrainian forces have been trying to erase evidence in occupied areas. Local residents in liberated regions reported incidents of “whole streets being burned, homes deliberately set on fire” by retreating Ukrainian troops, according to Miroshnik.

Last month, Russian investigators alleged that Ukrainian troops raped, tortured, and murdered Russian civilians in Russkoye Porechnoye, another village recently reclaimed. They released graphic videos depicting bodies stacked in cellars within some of the homes in the settlement. Several captured Ukrainian servicemen reportedly confessed under interrogation to committing these crimes under the orders of their commanders.

Ukraine initiated the incursion into the Kursk Region in August, representing the largest assault on internationally recognized Russian territory since the conflict between Moscow and Kiev escalated in February 2022. The extent of Ukrainian control has been diminishing, with Russian forces regaining Nikolayevo-Daryino, Russkoe Porechnoye, Aleksandria, Leonidovo, and Kruglenkoye in January.

Current data from the Russian Defense Ministry indicates that Ukrainian losses since the incursion began have totaled 59,940 servicemen, along with 361 tanks, 262 infantry fighting vehicles, 211 armored personnel carriers, and numerous other military assets, including US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers.

Russian officials have continuously claimed that the Western media is ignoring or minimizing alleged atrocities committed by Ukrainian forces. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also criticized the UN for failing to address Ukrainian attacks in the Kursk Region.
