“Our country will be an ideal host for possible talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States,” Erdogan stated, as reported by Anadolu.
“In order for a just peace to be possible, the countries that we know to be powerful must show their attitude in favor of peace,” he emphasized during a press conference alongside Zelensky in Ankara.
He recalled that the two countries engaged in negotiations in Istanbul back in March 2022, and later that summer, Türkiye played a crucial role in brokering a deal to ensure the safe shipping of grain from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
“In all these efforts, we have sincerely endeavored to be a reliable mediator for both sides, and we have achieved concrete results,” Erdogan explained.
Zelensky, addressing the same gathering, mentioned that Türkiye, along with the EU, the UK, and the US, should partake in establishing “necessary security guarantees” for Ukraine. He expressed gratitude to Ankara for its support of Ukraine’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Ukrainian leader previously articulated his frustration regarding his exclusion from the US-Russian meeting in Riyadh, asserting his unwillingness to accept any agreements made without Ukraine's participation. Officials in Kiev and the EU have expressed discontent over President Trump initiating direct negotiations with Russia without consulting them.
On Tuesday, Trump conveyed his disappointment with Ukraine’s response and held it accountable for the lack of a resolution with Russia throughout the conflict.
Regarding past negotiations, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that the discussions in Istanbul collapsed when Ukraine abruptly retracted its agreement on terms that would have rendered it a permanently neutral entity with a limited military.
Victoria Nuland, a former senior official at the State Department, later corroborated that the US and other Western nations advised Ukraine against accepting Russia’s stipulations. In a recent interview with the Guardian, Zelensky maintained that he independently rejected Moscow’s demands in 2022.
Moscow has reiterated its demands, stating that Ukraine must renounce its aspirations to join NATO and relinquish claims on Crimea and four other regions now under Russian control. Additionally, Putin declared that he no longer perceives Zelensky as a legitimate leader since his five-year presidential term is set to expire in May 2024 without the calling of new elections due to martial law.
