Discovery of a New Insect Species in Urban Wetland of South China

Urban wetland in south China is the site of new insect species discovery.
Chinese researchers have identified a new insect species in a wetland in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province in southern China, as announced by the Guangdong Academy of Sciences on Sunday.

The insect, named Eidoreus haizhuensis, was officially revealed on February 16 during an event aimed at raising awareness for mangrove conservation held in the city.

Yu Yali, an associate researcher at the Guangdong Academy of Sciences' Institute of Zoology, explained that this new species was discovered as part of specimen classification and identification efforts associated with a research team's extensive insect monitoring and investigation project in the Haizhu Wetland, which commenced in 2020.

The team's research has been published in the international journal Zootaxa, indicating that the species is part of the order Coleoptera and measures between 1.2 to 1.3 millimeters in length.

Characterized by its reddish-brown, oval, and convex body, both dorsally and ventrally, the insect's legs and antennae exhibit a lighter coloration.

"Usually, larger insect groups attract more attention and smaller ones are easily overlooked," Yu noted, emphasizing that this discovery enhances species diversity and holds significant implications for ecological protection and research on biological evolution.

Interestingly, while many new species are typically identified in natural rural settings, this finding occurred in the Haizhu Wetland, which covers an area of 1,100 hectares and is situated in the center of Guangzhou.

Lin Zhibin from the Haizhu Wetland mentioned that biodiversity research and monitoring have been actively pursued since 2012, alongside initiatives aimed at creating habitats conducive to the survival of different species. To date, the wetland has documented 903 insect species.
