According to the memo, beginning this year, the entertainment company will replace the 'Diversity & Inclusion' performance metric used to assess executive compensation with a new 'Talent Strategy' factor. The former aimed to enhance the diversity and inclusion of Disney executives and managers, while the new policy will concentrate on business outcomes and reinforcing company values, promoting an entertainment-driven approach rather than an agenda-driven one.
Additionally, the studio will discontinue its contentious 'Reimagine Tomorrow' initiative, which was launched in 2021 to emphasize stories and talent from “underrepresented communities.” Under this initiative, Disney had intended for 50% of its characters to come from minority backgrounds and to adopt inclusion standards across all its content.
The initiative faced criticism last year, leading to a federal civil rights complaint against the company for allegedly using race, color, religion, sex, or national origin as the sole basis for hiring decisions. The program will be rebranded as 'MyDisneyToday,' focusing on the company’s effectiveness in attracting top talent.
These policy changes at Disney come in the wake of Trump’s renewed efforts against DEI initiatives since his return to office. On Inauguration Day, he signed multiple executive orders that effectively curtailed DEI programs in the federal government.
Although Trump cannot compel private companies to abolish their DEI initiatives, one of his executive orders “encouraged the private sector to end illegal DEI discrimination and preferences.” His actions have already influenced the policies of numerous prominent US companies, leading organizations such as Target, Amazon, Meta, McDonald's, Walmart, Ford, Lowe’s, and others to alter or eliminate their DEI programs to mitigate the risk of legal repercussions from the new administration.
