On Tuesday, airstrikes in the Paktika border province reportedly resulted in the deaths of 46 individuals, primarily women and children, according to Hamdullah Fitrat, a spokesman for the Taliban government in Kabul. Four locations in Barmal district were targeted, Fitrat stated in a media briefing on Wednesday.
Islamabad has not yet issued a response to these allegations. However, on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported that anonymous sources within the Pakistani military confirmed attacks on several hideouts of the Pakistani Taliban in a mountainous region of Paktika. A source cited by Reuters similarly identified the target as the Islamist militant group, which operates independently from Afghanistan's Taliban.
The Afghan Defense Ministry asserted that those affected by the strikes were refugees from Pakistan's Waziristan area. The ministry condemned the incident as a “barbaric act” and “clear aggression,” emphasizing that Kabul “will not let this act of cowardice go unanswered.”
These airstrikes occurred shortly after Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s special representative for Afghanistan, visited Kabul to engage in talks with local officials. Afghanistan’s foreign ministry formalized a protest to Islamabad’s ambassador on Wednesday, highlighting the stark contrast between diplomatic efforts and the alleged military actions taken by Pakistan.
Last week, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) reportedly killed 17 Pakistani troops in Southern Waziristan. In response, the Pakistani military announced on Wednesday that security forces had eliminated 13 insurgents in the same region.
