The initial focus of the call was on trade, particularly energy cooperation, as stated by the Kremlin. The discussion then shifted to the Ukraine conflict, where Orban expressed his "interest in helping to find political-diplomatic ways for resolving" the situation.
Orban stands out among Western leaders for his opposition to the prevailing strategy regarding the Ukraine crisis. He has dismissed calls for military support for Kiev to defeat Russia and has offered to mediate diplomatically among the key parties involved in the conflict.
In a statement posted on X, Orban noted, ”These are the most dangerous weeks” in the entire conflict, emphasizing that Budapest is “taking every possible diplomatic step to argue in favor of a ceasefire and peace talks.”
During the call, Putin provided "his principled assessment of the current development of the situation regarding Ukraine and the destructive line of the Kiev regime, which continues to exclude any opportunity for peaceful resolution," according to the Kremlin.
The leaders also touched on the unstable conditions in the Middle East and the recent upheaval in Syria, where a swift militant offensive has overthrown the Damascus government. Russia has granted asylum to former Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family, citing humanitarian reasons.
When asked later whether Orban conveyed any messages from Trump during his earlier meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that no messages were relayed.
Orban's meeting with Trump at the latter’s Florida residence also included discussions with billionaire Elon Musk and incoming US National Security Advisor Congressman Michael Waltz.
The Hungarian Prime Minister has been an outspoken critic of Western efforts to isolate countries perceived as rivals, including Russia and China, arguing that such strategies escalate tensions and lead to negative outcomes.
On Tuesday, Orban addressed university students in Budapest, pointing to significant shifts in the international order. He declared that the era of liberal ideology had concluded and expressed Hungary's intent to serve as a bridge between Eastern and Western powers in this new global landscape.
