US President Donald Trump is “acting as a messenger of God for the Jewish people,” according to Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox Shas party leader Aryeh Deri, who responded to the president’s suggestion for America to take charge of Gaza.
This proposal was presented during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, outlining plans for the US to manage the dismantling of unexploded ordnance, the leveling of destroyed structures, and the redevelopment of Gaza. Trump envisions the region as a “magnificent” destination that could attract visitors from across the globe.
“I don’t want to be cute. I don’t want to be a wise guy, but – the Riviera of the Middle East. This could be so magnificent,” Trump remarked.
Israeli politicians have largely responded with enthusiasm to the proposal.
Deri stated, “You are acting as a messenger of God for the Jewish people, and you have achieved great success because of your steadfast stand on the right side of the people of Israel against all its enemies.”
Netanyahu expressed optimism, saying, “I think it is something that could change history, and it is worthwhile really pursuing this idea.”
Former National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir shared his excitement on social media, writing, “Donald, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also extended his support, highlighting the potential for meaningful positive transformation in the region.
On the other hand, the proposal has faced international backlash. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the plan, claiming it violates international law and undermines the rights of the Palestinian people.
Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan have also denounced the idea, equating it to ethnic cleansing and stressing the importance of a two-state solution, aiming to rebuild Gaza without displacing its inhabitants.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s perspective that a resolution to the Middle East conflict should be grounded in the coexistence of two states – Israel and Palestine.
Trump’s proposal has also met with disapproval from numerous EU leaders, as well as representatives from China, Brazil, Australia, and the UN.
