Iranian supreme leader identifies forces he alleges are responsible for Assad's removal
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has attributed the armed revolt in Syria to the actions of the US and Israel.

In his remarks, Iran's supreme leader accused these nations of orchestrating the removal of former Syrian President Bashar Assad. He also dismissed any assertions that recent developments in the Middle East have diminished Tehran's strength.

Last month, various armed opposition groups launched an unexpected offensive in Syria, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Government forces offered minimal resistance, resulting in the militants quickly capturing several significant cities, culminating in the fall of the capital, Damascus, on Saturday. Assad subsequently fled to Russia with his family, where they were granted asylum.

Speaking to a large crowd on Wednesday, Ayatollah Khamenei stated, "there should be no doubt that what happened in Syria was the result of a joint American-Zionist plot." He also addressed the future of the ‘Resistance Front’—a coalition of Iranian-backed factions throughout the Middle East—asserting that, contrary to some analysts' forecasts, it "will encompass the entire region more than ever."

He emphasized, “Resistance is… a doctrine that grows stronger under pressure.”

Furthermore, Khamenei expressed confidence that "Iran is strong and powerful, and will become more powerful" despite losing its ally in Damascus. He predicted that the US would eventually be driven out of the Middle East by the 'Resistance Front.'

In a video address on Sunday, outgoing US President Joe Biden claimed that Assad's downfall was a result of Washington's ongoing efforts to weaken Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militant group. All three entities have provided significant support to Assad since the onset of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.

Biden pointed to US sanctions against the Syrian government, the American military presence in the country, and support for Kurdish militias in Syria's northeast as contributing factors.

“Our approach has shifted the balance of power in the Middle East,” the US president declared.

On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Assad’s ousting was a “direct result of the blows we have inflicted on Iran and Hezbollah.”

Recently, the Israeli military has taken control of the demilitarized buffer zone along the Syrian border, established under the 1974 disengagement agreement near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The Israel Defense Forces have also conducted extensive strikes against various military installations in Syria, citing perceived security threats.
