Trump appoints Ukraine doubter to high-level Pentagon position
Elbridge Colby, the policy adviser nominee, has been an outspoken critic of military support for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

US President-elect Donald Trump has revealed his nominations for four key Pentagon positions. Among these nominees, Colby stands out for his firm opposition to President Joe Biden’s military assistance to Kiev.

In a Sunday post on his Truth Social platform, Trump announced Stephen Feinberg as his deputy secretary of defense, Colby as undersecretary for policy, Michael Duffey for undersecretary for acquisitions and sustainment, and Emil Michael for undersecretary for research and engineering.

Colby previously held a senior Pentagon role during Trump’s first term and played a significant role in drafting the 2018 US National Defense Strategy, which designated China as the leading "strategic competitor." If confirmed, he will advise Feinberg and prospective Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on defense and national security matters.

As an anti-interventionist, Colby has consistently opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent US military deployments abroad. While he endorses economic sanctions against Russia, he has often cautioned that providing Ukraine with substantial military assistance may not serve US interests and could potentially escalate into a third world war.

“I think [nuclear war] is close,” he indicated in a recent discussion with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, emphasizing that “the people who are blithe about it are incredibly irresponsible.”

Colby noted that “the Ukrainians are losing the war” and advocated for a focus on the “defense of the homeland” for US military resources.

Furthermore, he has critiqued Ukraine's potential membership in NATO, suggesting that the US should refrain from engaging in the conflict with Russia to maintain credibility as NATO's largest military force.

Duffey, also a Trump appointee, previously suspended military aid to Ukraine in 2019 following a controversial phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky. This phone call led to Trump’s impeachment by Democratic lawmakers, who alleged that he leveraged aid to coerce Zelensky into investigating Hunter Biden, the son of then-candidate Joe Biden. Both Trump and Zelensky maintained that no such agreement occurred, and Trump was acquitted in the Senate in 2020.

Feinberg, a hedge fund manager, is a significant donor to Trump, while Michael held a senior executive position at the ride-sharing company Uber.
