Speaking in Budapest just hours before Trump's inauguration in Washington, DC, Orban expressed his belief that “the sun will shine differently over Brussels” and reiterated his critiques of current EU policies.
He lamented that while a patriotic government is taking charge in the United States, Brussels continues to be “under occupation by a left-wing, transatlantic oligarchy.” Addressing accusations against his government regarding its commitment to democracy and the rule of law, Orban characterized these allegations as orchestrated attacks by the “liberal united front financed by George Soros,” a Hungarian-born billionaire he has previously accused of meddling in EU politics.
Orban noted the shifting balance of economic power towards Asia, asserting that European nations need to adapt accordingly. He criticized Brussels and its liberal politicians for overlooking these changes, suggesting they have compromised EU member states through “woke capitalism,” which prioritizes ideological objectives over competitiveness.
He claimed, “The sick man of Europe today is the European Union,” and pointed to failures in addressing critical issues like the migration crisis, pressures faced by EU farmers, and national security threats. To rally support for a change in leadership within the EU, Orban announced, “I hereby launch the second phase of the operation to capture Brussels.”
Orban's Fidesz party is part of a newly formed Patriots for Europe coalition that contested the centrists in the previous year's European Parliament elections. This alliance positioned itself as the third-largest group in the EU legislature, following the EPP Group led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats.
