The Pentagon is increasing its military presence at the Mexico border in response to a rise in illegal crossings. Upon assuming office, President Trump declared a national emergency regarding the border situation and promised to stop “an invasion” of migrants attempting to enter the U.S. unlawfully.
“President Trump signed an executive order – 1,500 additional troops to the United States southern border. This comes off of his day-one action … to direct the Department of Defense to make homeland security a core mission of the agency,” stated White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday.
Currently, approximately 2,200 active-duty troops are stationed at the border as part of Joint Task Force-North, which is headquartered in El Paso, Texas. These military personnel are collaborating with the National Guard and Customs and Border Protection agents.
According to CNN, the troops are primarily involved in “mostly logistical and bureaucratic tasks,” such as data entry and monitoring.
Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses indicated that the Pentagon plans to send “helicopters with associated crews, and intelligence analysts to support increased detection and monitoring efforts.”
The Pentagon will also “provide military airlift to support DHS deportation flights of more than five thousand illegal aliens from the San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas, sectors detained by Customs and Border Protection,” Salesses informed reporters. “This is just the beginning.”
Overall, Trump is preparing to deploy around 10,000 troops to the border, as reported by The Washington Post on Wednesday, citing an internal CBP document.
Since taking office on Monday, Trump has promised to defend the nation from the “invasion” of unlawful migrants. In an executive order signed shortly after he entered the White House, he asserted that many undocumented immigrants “present significant threats to national security and public safety” and are “committing vile and heinous acts against innocent Americans.”
On the same day, Trump declared a national emergency at the border and discontinued a CBP application designed to aid migrants in scheduling appointments at border crossings.
The U.S. experienced a surge of migrants during Joe Biden’s presidency, with border agents recording a historic 2.8 million encounters with migrants in 2023. Furthermore, more than 1.5 million migrants were classified as “gotaways”—those who evaded CBP detection—during the fiscal years 2021 through 2023, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
