North Korea asserted on Saturday that it had discovered remnants of a crashed South Korean military drone and threatened retaliation, escalating tensions on the peninsula.
As reported by Pyongyang’s state-run news agency KCNA, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was likely deployed to disperse leaflets over the capital. The outlet stated that similar drones were seen earlier this month distributing leaflets containing “political propaganda and slander.”
KCNA warned, “If a violation of the DPRK’s territorial ground, air and waters by ROK’s military means is discovered and confirmed again, it will be regarded as a grave military provocation against the sovereignty of the DPRK and a declaration of war and an immediate retaliatory attack will be launched,” according to Reuters.
Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and a high-ranking government official, claimed on Thursday that Pyongyang possesses “clear evidence” that the South had intruded into the North's airspace.
South Korea has not confirmed whether its drones crossed the border. Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman Colonel Lee Sung-jun stated this week that the issue is “something that should be clarified by North Korea.”
In recent months, Pyongyang has engaged in hostile rhetoric, alleging provocations from its southern counterpart. Earlier this week, North Korea detonated sections of roads leading to South Korea and pledged to “completely separate” the two nations, planning to establish an “eternal fortress” along the border.
In January, Kim Jong-un suggested abandoning the longtime goal of reunification, designating South Korea as a “principal enemy.”
These rising tensions stand in stark contrast to the series of amicable gestures witnessed in the late 2010s, during which then-US President Donald Trump aimed to de-escalate the situation on the Korean peninsula. However, the culmination of a summit between Trump and Kim in Hanoi in 2019 ended in disappointment, with both sides blaming each other for imposing unrealistic demands. Since then, Pyongyang has increased missile tests, while the US has conducted more joint military exercises with South Korea.
