During a meeting on Friday with leaders of prominent BRICS media agencies at his presidential residence in Novo-Ogaryovo, near Moscow, Putin stated that Russia is focused on achieving lasting peace with Ukraine rather than settling for a fleeting truce.
He emphasized, "If we are talking about some kind of peace processes, then these should not be processes related to a ceasefire for a week, two weeks, or a year, so that NATO countries [which support Ukraine] could rearm and stock up on new ammunition." According to him, Moscow aims to create “conditions for long-term, sustainable and lasting peace that provide equal security for all participants in this difficult process.”
Putin acknowledged that the Russian authorities “respect and understand” the eagerness of their “friends” in BRICS and beyond to resolve the Ukrainian crisis swiftly and through peaceful means.
He noted that the conflict is “an irritating element in international affairs, in European affairs, in the economy, and so on,” and affirmed that Russia is keen to bring it to a resolution as quickly and peacefully as possible.
While Russia is open to resuming talks with Ukraine, Putin insisted that this would only be based on the document established in Istanbul in late March 2022, which marked the last negotiations between the two sides. He pointed out that during those discussions, Ukraine expressed a willingness to declare military neutrality, limit its armed forces, and cease discrimination against ethnic Russians. In exchange, Moscow was prepared to join other major global powers in providing security guarantees to Ukraine.
He remarked, “The document did not come into force only because the Ukrainians were ordered not to do this. The elites in the US and some European countries felt the desire to seek Russia’s strategic defeat.”
