In a televised address on Saturday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the killing of the prominent militant figure underscored the notion that no part of the Middle East is off-limits for Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) executed a bombing at an underground compound in Beirut, which resulted in Nasrallah's death. Hezbollah confirmed the news on the same day.
Netanyahu specifically addressed Iran, referring to it as the "ayatollahs’ regime," and issued a warning regarding Israel's resolve to respond to any threats. He said, “Those who strike at us, we will strike at them. There is nowhere in Iran or the Middle East beyond the reach of the long arm of Israel, and today you know how true that is.”
The Israeli Prime Minister also indicated that Nasrallah's death sends a significant message to Hamas, adding, “The more that Hamas political chief Yahya Sinwar realizes that Hezbollah is no longer coming to save him, the greater the chances for the return of our hostages.”
Netanyahu cautioned the Israeli public about the challenging days ahead, describing the situation as a "historical turning point." He assured that the nation would confront substantial challenges in the near future.
According to reports from ABC News, there may be plans for a ground operation by the IDF against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Tensions have escalated recently following a series of border strikes between Hezbollah and Israel, which have heightened fears of a larger conflict since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October. Notably, in early September, several pagers and handheld radios detonated throughout Lebanon, leading to numerous casualties and injuries, which the UN condemned as "unacceptable." The organization’s human rights chief, Volker Turk, has called for a thorough investigation into the incidents.
Israel has not officially commented on its involvement in the explosions, but it is widely believed that Israeli intelligence was responsible for the covert operation.
