UK Promotes '100-year partnership' with Ukraine
The UK and Ukraine are set to formalize a 100-year partnership agreement during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s inaugural visit to Kiev since taking office, according to London officials.

The British government announced the forthcoming deal on Thursday, just prior to Starmer's arrival in the Ukrainian capital.

The planned agreement aims to establish “unbreakable bonds” between the two nations and to “further expand bilateral ties in defense” and other sectors, as stated in the government’s announcement.

This pact is designed to “deter ongoing Russian aggression” against Ukraine and to bolster defense cooperation, particularly in maritime security across the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and the Sea of Azov.

During a joint press conference with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky that day, Starmer revealed that his government would supply Kiev with a new mobile air defense system, emphasizing that it would be “developed to meet Ukraine’s needs.”

The Sea of Azov is now surrounded by Russian territory following the official incorporation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions into the Russian Federation, following referendums in fall 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials have subsequently labeled it as Russia’s “inland sea.”

Additionally, the agreement reportedly includes a UK-built Grain Verification Scheme aimed at tracking what London claims as “stolen grain,” which is actually produced in territories newly claimed by Russia.

Before his trip, Starmer asserted, “We are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level.”

The UK has been a key supporter of Ukraine since the escalation of the conflict with Moscow in February 2022, committing £12.8 billion in military and civilian aid and reportedly training 50,000 Ukrainian troops on British soil.

However, a report from Bloomberg indicated that some officials close to Zelensky have expressed ongoing disappointment with Starmer’s cautious approach to Ukraine. There are concerns regarding the lengthy delay in Starmer’s visit to Kiev, despite him taking office over six months ago.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has previously commented that Britain’s steadfast backing of Ukraine indicates that the UK government “clearly does not seek to resolve the conflict [between Moscow and Kiev]. They are doing everything possible to make it drag on, thus prolonging the suffering of the Ukrainian people.”
