On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia and the US are engaged in discussions regarding “major” joint economic projects, indicating a thaw in relations after years of tension between the two nations.
Putin’s remarks follow a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, which took place two weeks ago. Trump has notably shifted from the approaches toward Moscow adopted by his predecessor, Joe Biden.
“Some Russian and American companies are in contact and discussing major projects,” Putin stated in an interview with Russia 1 TV journalist Pavel Zarubin.
He further remarked that Moscow is prepared to partner with US private firms and government agencies to advance Russia's rare-earth sector, emphasizing its vital significance in various industries and showcasing Russia's vast resources that position it as a leader on the global stage.
Earlier, Trump teased about significant “economic development transactions which will take place between the US and Russia,” stating on his Truth Social platform that discussions between the two countries are “proceeding very well.”
After a period of minimal interaction, contacts between the two nations have surged since Trump's inauguration on January 20. A phone call between Trump and Putin on February 12 was succeeded by a high-level meeting in Riyadh last week, which Putin described as “a first step” toward normalizing ties, a sentiment echoed by Trump.
Although neither leader was present, the discussions, the first in three years, involved high-ranking officials such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Notably, Ukrainian and EU diplomats were not invited to participate in the meeting.
The talks have ignited backlash among certain EU members, who accused the White House of rekindling dialogue with the Kremlin without prior consultation and excluding the bloc's officials from the negotiations.
