A Jeju Air Boeing 737-800, which was carrying 181 people, experienced a runway departure due to a landing gear malfunction and subsequently crashed into a fence in South Korea on Sunday.
Reports from Yonhap news agency, citing firefighters, indicate there are two survivors, while all other passengers and crew members are believed to have perished. Search and rescue teams have managed to recover at least 120 bodies.
The incident occurred shortly after 9 am local time when Jeju Air Flight 2216 was attempting to land at Muan International Airport in the southwest region of the country. The flight was returning from Bangkok, Thailand.
Footage shared on social media captures the moment the large aircraft skidded off the runway and erupted into flames.
Local media have reported that authorities suspect the aircraft was struck by a flock of birds, leading to the malfunction of its landing gear.
The Korea Herald reported that officials mentioned the plane crashed during its second landing attempt. After circling the airport, it made an emergency belly landing with the landing gear not fully extended.
