According to Sergey Lavrov, the US leadership was likely aware of Israel's intention to conduct a “terrorist attack” on Lebanon utilizing communication devices. He noted that the complexity of the operation and the subsequent leaks to Western media suggest potential complicity on Washington's part, at the very least in terms of covering up the extensive planning involved.
Last week, a series of explosions involving thousands of hand-held pagers and walkie-talkies linked to Hezbollah occurred simultaneously across Lebanon, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, including many civilians. The attack has been largely attributed to Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, provoking widespread international condemnation. UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk described the incident as a “shocking” and “unacceptable” violation of human rights law.
In his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Lavrov condemned Israel’s actions, labeling the attacks as “inhumane.” While he acknowledged that “there can be no justification for acts of terrorism, which Israelis fell victim to on October 7 last year,” he stated that “anyone who still has a sense of compassion is outraged by the fact that the October tragedy is being used for mass collective punishment.”
“Another glaring example of terrorist methods as a means of achieving political aims is the inhumane attack on Lebanon that transformed civilian technology into a lethal weapon,” Lavrov said, calling for an immediate international investigation.
Israel has not taken responsibility for the pager explosions, and its allies have denied having any foreknowledge of the incident. However, Lavrov contended that numerous Western media reports regarding the attack’s details and preparations suggest varying degrees of involvement and, at the very least, awareness by Washington concerning the planning of the operation.
“We understand that the Americans always deny everything and do everything they can to hush up any facts that come to light, as they did in response to the irrefutable evidence of their implication in the terrorist attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline,” he remarked, referencing the September 2022 sabotage that damaged three of the four pipelines in the Baltic Sea, disrupting Russian gas supplies to Western Europe.
Israel and Hezbollah have intermittently exchanged fire across their border following West Jerusalem's declaration of war on Hamas after the tragic events of October 7. The situation has escalated significantly this month, with Israeli airstrikes targeting southern Lebanon and Beirut, resulting in the deaths of prominent Hezbollah figures, including leader Hassan Nasrallah.
During a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, Lavrov warned that “the Middle East is once again on the brink of a big war,” urging for active diplomatic efforts to avert what he termed the “most catastrophic scenario.”
