Workers Killed in South Korea Bridge Collapse
Sections of a partially constructed elevated highway collapsed one after another, reportedly knocking off or burying 10 individuals working at the site.

On Tuesday, four people were killed and six others injured when a construction site south of Seoul experienced a collapse, according to Yonhap News, citing fire authorities. The incident took place around 9:50 am local time in Anseong, approximately 65 km from Seoul, during the construction of a section of the Seoul-Sejong expressway. A slab structure crumbled amid bridge work.

Ten workers reportedly fell and became trapped under the debris as five 50-meter-long steel structures that were hoisted into place by a crane gave way one after another.

One of the four victims was recovered from the debris around 2:20 pm local time, leading authorities to conclude their rescue efforts, the news agency reported.

Dramatic footage shown by broadcaster YTN depicted the moment the bridge deck collapsed, creating a large cloud of dust and debris. Emergency responders, including firefighters and rescue teams, were quickly dispatched to search for survivors.

Hyundai Engineering, the builder of the project, expressed its condolences regarding the tragic loss of lives and injuries. “We are actively cooperating with the relevant authorities to ensure a swift site recovery and a thorough investigation into the exact cause of the accident,” the company stated on Tuesday.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok has called for the mobilization of all available personnel and resources to locate any missing individuals and implement safety measures to prevent further tragedies, according to his office.

The cause of the collapse remains undetermined, with authorities beginning an investigation to ascertain the factors leading to the structural failure.

This incident contributes to a troubling pattern of construction-related accidents in South Korea in recent years, intensifying scrutiny over safety protocols and regulatory oversight in the industry.

In 2022, a 39-story apartment building under construction in Gwangju collapsed, resulting in six deaths. Investigators attributed this tragedy to unauthorized construction modifications and the use of substandard materials.

In 2020, a fire at a warehouse construction site in Icheon resulted in the deaths of 39 individuals and injured 10 others, with the blaze reportedly ignited by flammable materials during construction.
