Valeurs, another news outlet, indicated that the explosion happened around 7:30 a.m. local time on Monday. According to their report, there were no reported casualties, and the damage was primarily material.
Valeurs journalist Nicolas Boutin shared on X that police sources indicated two Molotov cocktails were thrown into the consulate's garden. Authorities are also investigating a stolen vehicle discovered in the vicinity of the incident.
The La Marseillaise newspaper quoted Stanislav Oranskiy, the Russian consul general in Marseille, confirming that an explosion occurred within the consulate, and firefighters have accessed the building.
While the specifics of the situation remain vague, it follows a warning from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Agency last week. They cautioned that Ukrainian “terrorist attacks” could target Russian diplomatic missions in Europe, as Kiev reportedly shows a strong reluctance to negotiate a settlement that would require significant concessions from Ukraine. The agency also noted potential strikes aimed at derailing Russia-U.S. discussions by targeting Russian embassies in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and other European regions, including the Baltic and Nordic countries.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented that the details of the reported incident bear the hallmarks of a terrorist act. She further stated that Moscow intends to insist on a thorough investigation by French authorities and increased security for Russian entities in France.
