The blast at the Russian consulate in Marseille, France, on Monday might have been a terrorist act, as indicated by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
Stanislav Oranskiy, the Russian consul general in Marseille, confirmed that the explosion occurred within the consulate premises and that firefighters are currently responding to the situation. He informed TASS that three explosive devices were thrown onto the grounds, with one detonating. Fortunately, it reportedly caused only property damage and no injuries.
Zakharova remarked that the incident exhibited “all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack.” She emphasized that Moscow would demand that Paris undertake “comprehensive and prompt measures to investigate, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russian foreign missions.”
The identity of the assailants remains unknown, but local media have reported that police are actively investigating the incident and examining a stolen vehicle discovered near the blast site.
Last week, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service had warned that the Ukrainian government might resort to terrorist tactics against Moscow’s diplomatic missions in Europe to disrupt peace negotiations. The service suggested that the objective would be to prevent Kiev from making “excessive concessions” in any potential settlement with Russia.
