The tune was labeled “Russian propaganda” by Ukraine after two schoolgirls gained popularity for performing it on TikTok.

A Russian military choir has released its own rendition of the viral hit song ‘Sigma Boy.’

In the video, which has circulated widely on social media, the servicemen are seen singing the song while in uniform. The performance blends clips of Russian soldiers operating various weapon systems in a combat setting, along with footage from the annual World War II victory parade in Red Square.

The new lyrics celebrate “the real sigma boy,” characterized as “strong and brave,” who “will soon return home with victory.” This video was shared online in advance of Defender of the Fatherland Day, a public holiday celebrated in Russia on February 23.

The catchy tune, initially recorded by Russian schoolgirls Betsy and Maria Yankovskaya, soared in popularity on TikTok and made it to Billboard’s top ten dance hits after its release in October 2024. The song revolves around a popular boy that “every girl wants to dance with.”

Nela Riehl, an Afro-Ghanian member of the European Parliament from Germany, criticized the song as “a viral Russian trope,” stating that it “communicates patriarchal and pro-Russian worldviews.”

On February 7, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation described the track as “part of a wider information warfare” effort and noted its role in Russia’s “soft power.”
