On Monday, Israel carried out bombings in Beirut and southern Lebanon, claiming its targets included a senior Hezbollah commander as well as the group’s weapon depots and rocket launch sites. In retaliation, Hezbollah launched missiles into northern Israel.
“The Spanish government expresses its deep dismay and condemnation of the Israeli bombardment of southern and eastern Lebanon today, which has left hundreds dead, in response to Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel over the weekend,” stated the Foreign Ministry in Madrid on Monday evening.
“The spiral of violence must stop,” the ministry continued.
Spain urged all involved parties to “respect civilian lives and the basic principles of international humanitarian law” and to fully adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, as conveyed through an unofficial translation from the ministry.
“War must be avoided at all costs,” the Spanish Foreign Ministry declared, stressing that “an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza is absolutely necessary to reduce regional tension.”
The tension between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated in recent weeks, particularly after a series of incidents last week resulted in the explosion of thousands of communications devices linked to the Lebanese group, leading to at least 37 deaths and around 3,000 injuries, including many children. Israeli jets targeted Beirut last Friday, resulting in the death of Ibrahim Aqil, a senior Hezbollah commander.
In response, Hezbollah launched a barrage of missiles into northern Israel on Sunday, followed by additional strikes on Monday afternoon, coinciding with Israeli air raids on Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. The Lebanese Health Ministry has reported more than 350 deaths and over 1,200 injuries due to the Israeli bombings on Monday, with 42 women and 24 children among the casualties.
The Israel Defense Forces stated they had targeted “more than 1,300” Hezbollah installations, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant describing the operations as “crushing what was built by Hezbollah for 20 years.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Lebanese civilians to “get out of harm’s way” and not to allow Hezbollah to use them as “human shields.”
“Once our operation is finished, you can come back safely to your homes,” Netanyahu said in a video message in English.
Since last October, Israel and Hezbollah had engaged in intermittent exchanges of missile fire and airstrikes, while the IDF primarily focused on “eradicating” Hamas in Gaza. The Palestinian group’s attacks on October 7 are blamed for the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis, while Israeli military operations since then have reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
