Trump Serious About Seeking a Third Term
The US president has hinted at constitutional workarounds to bypass the two-term limit.

US President Donald Trump stated he is “not joking” about the possibility of seeking a third term in office during a Sunday interview with NBC News. He mentioned there are “methods” to pursue another bid, despite the Constitution’s two-term limit on the presidency.

Trump shared these insights during a phone call from Mar-a-Lago, marking his most direct comments yet regarding the potential of extending his presidency beyond 2029. “A lot of people want me to do it,” he remarked.

The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1951 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four electoral victories, specifies: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

Pressed for clarification on whether any specific plans to circumvent the limit have been presented to him, Trump responded: “There are – not plans – but there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”

“I’m not joking,” he reiterated, adding that “it is far too early to think about it.”

When asked about a hypothetical scenario where Vice President J. D. Vance could run for president and then transfer the office to him, Trump replied, “That’s one. But there are others too,” without providing further details.

While Trump’s allies have often dismissed his earlier comments about a third term as jokes, his remarks on Sunday suggest otherwise. Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon recently indicated to NewsNation that Trump could “run and win again in 2028,” hinting at possible legal tactics.

Earlier this year, Republican Congressman Andy Ogles proposed a constitutional amendment that would allow presidents to serve three non-consecutive terms, although it has yet to gain significant support. Amendments to the Constitution require a two-thirds majority approval in both the House and Senate, followed by ratification from three-quarters of the states.

Trump won the 2024 election decisively against Democratic candidate and former Vice President Kamala Harris, becoming the second president in US history to serve two non-consecutive terms.
