Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has taken a strong stand against those who oppose the H-1B visa initiative. The billionaire has vowed to confront critics, many of whom supported US President-elect Donald Trump, in a battle they “cannot possibly comprehend.”
The recent online dispute was sparked when Musk advocated for increasing the number of foreign workers allowed entry through H-1B visas, arguing that this would help the US “keep winning.” This appeal received backing from fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. Both have been appointed by Trump to lead DOGE, a specialized advisory group focused on identifying government inefficiencies.
However, many social media users countered this perspective, contending that the program has often been exploited by US companies to substitute local talent with lower-paid, entry-level guest workers from countries like India.
In response to the backlash, Musk fired back with a provocative message on his X platform, stating, “Take a big step back and f**k yourself in the face.” This remark appears to be a variation of a line from the character Les Grossman, a fictional movie producer portrayed by Tom Cruise in the 2008 film “Tropic Thunder.”
Musk reiterated his stance by declaring that he “will go to war” over the H-1B visa program “the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.” He emphasized, “The reason I am in America along with so many critical people who built SpaceX, Tesla and hundreds of other companies that made America strong is because of H-1B.”
Additionally, he expressed his admiration for those who strive to contribute to the nation, stating that “anyone – of any race, creed or nationality – who came to America and worked like hell to contribute to this country will forever have my respect.”
Despite previously criticizing the H-1B visa program and taking measures to restrict its usage during his first term with the intent to protect American jobs, Trump told the New York Post on Saturday that he now aligns with Musk’s viewpoint.
“I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I have been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It is a great program,” the president-elect affirmed.
Born in South Africa and now a naturalized US citizen, Musk was formerly an H-1B visa holder. His electric vehicle company, Tesla, secured 724 H-1B visas for its workforce in 2024.
