DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, gained rapid acclaim after releasing its AI Assistant app earlier this month. By this week, it had risen to the top as the most downloaded free app on the US Apple App Store, overtaking OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The swift popularity of DeepSeek can be attributed to its free availability and user-friendly interface. Moreover, the company's choice to make its models open-source enabled developers around the world to enhance the software, accelerating its adoption and fostering innovation.
This development has sparked a notable decline in US tech stocks, with major firms like Nvidia experiencing significant losses. Investors have voiced concerns about the disruptive impact that DeepSeek’s cost-effective AI solutions pose to established technology leaders.
“DeepSeek’s r1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price,” Altman expressed on X on Monday. He also mentioned that it is “legit invigorating to have a new competitor!” and pledged to “pull up some releases.”
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump commented on the situation during a flight aboard Air Force One, referring to the launch of the Chinese AI model as a “wake-up call” for American tech firms to enhance their competitive edge.
Despite stringent US sanctions intended to limit China's access to advanced electronics crucial for the AI sector, DeepSeek has successfully matched the performance of its competitors from the US and India while utilizing significantly less computing power.
“Far from stifling Chinese innovation, Washington may have stimulated it,” the Financial Times noted on Monday.
Trump, who has been promoting his own $500 billion Stargate initiative—a collaborative project involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle—aimed at propelling the US to the forefront of global AI leadership, highlighted DeepSeek’s affordability.
“That’s good because you don’t have to spend this much money. I view that as a positive, as an asset,” he remarked on Monday. He emphasized that the US will “need to be laser focused on competing to win” in the AI industry.
