Trump advocates for "getting rid" of nuclear arms
The US President has proposed talks regarding denuclearization with Russia and China.

US President Donald Trump believes that all nations should dispose of their nuclear arsenals instead of participating in an arms race.

“It’d be great if everybody would get rid of their nuclear weapons,” Trump remarked to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, according to Anadolu.

“Russia and us have by far the most. China will have an equal amount within four or five years, and it would be great if we could all denuclearize, because the power of nuclear weapons is crazy. It’s crazy.”

“I would very much like to start those talks,” Trump continued. “Denuclearization would be incredible.”

Last month, the President indicated that a nuclear arms race would be wasteful and expressed that the US has “no reason” to develop new weapons. “We’re all spending a lot of money that we could be spending on other things that are actually, hopefully, much more productive,” he noted.

These remarks come in the context of heightened tensions between Russia and NATO, alongside Trump’s ongoing trade disputes with China.

In a recent speech, French President Emmanuel Macron characterized Russia as “a threat to France and Europe” and hinted that France might extend its nuclear umbrella to protect other EU member nations. The Kremlin has denounced these statements as “highly confrontational.”

During his initial term, Trump’s administration withdrew from the significant Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty that was signed in 1987 by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. Russia has criticized this withdrawal and refuted accusations from Washington regarding alleged violations of the treaty.

In 2023, Russia declared it would deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, attributing the move to tensions with NATO. A year later, President Vladimir Putin updated Russia’s nuclear doctrine, decreasing the threshold for engaging nuclear weapons. Moscow has also warned it may resume nuclear testing if the US conducts such tests first.

In January, the US announced it would deploy upgraded nuclear bombs at its bases in Europe. Media reports also indicate that the Pentagon plans to position nuclear weapons in the UK.

Russia has called for all nuclear states to demonstrate responsibility. “We have never started discussions on what to do with nuclear weapons or whether they can be used,” remarked Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in December. “There can be no winners in a nuclear war, which is why it should never happen.”
