Musk Introduces Tesla 'robotaxi'
Production of cybercabs, expected to price under $30,000, is projected to commence in 2026.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently unveiled a prototype of the highly anticipated self-driving 'robotaxi'. The vehicle is expected to be operational within the next two years.

The Cybercab, revealed at Warner Bros Studios in Los Angeles, is designed with two gull-wing doors and lacks a steering wheel or pedals. Musk stated that production would kick off in 2026 and that the vehicle would be available for under $30,000. He also introduced Tesla’s new Robovan during the event.

“Probably, well I tend to be little optimistic on time frames, but in 2026,” Musk mentioned to the audience. “Before 2027, let me put it that way.”

Musk highlighted that the vehicle is “highly optimized for autonomous transport,” and asserted that its operational costs would be around $0.2 per mile, noting that charging could occur without plugs.

He is committed to enhancing Tesla's transportation experience into a supervised full self-driving system, allowing passengers to “fall asleep and wake up at your destination.”

During his talk on safety, Musk likened the transition to autonomous vehicles to the evolution from human-operated elevators to automatic ones.

“We’ll see autonomous cars become ten times safer than a human,” he stated. “The autonomous future is here, we have 50 fully autonomous cars here tonight. You’ll see model Ys and the Cybercab. All driverless.”

Tesla began beta testing its Full Self-Driving software, an evolution of its Autopilot technology, four years ago. However, this feature has drawn considerable scrutiny from federal regulators. Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation after receiving reports of 20 crashes involving vehicles equipped with Autopilot updates, leading Tesla to recall the affected cars.
