CIIE: A Fresh Opportunity for Global Trade and Opening Up
The CIIE serves as a collaborative platform uniting companies, industries, and nations globally, demonstrating China's dedication to trade liberalization and a fresh strategy for opening up.
The 7th China International Import Expo is set to take place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10, 2024. This major global economic and trade event offers a platform for collaboration among companies, industries, and countries, while reinforcing China's commitment to trade liberalization and a refreshed approach to opening up.
Free trade is vital for global economic prosperity, and China is committed to fostering international trade liberalization. Nevertheless, the rise of de-globalization and protectionism has posed significant challenges, resulting in increased trade frictions, tariff increases, and various trade barriers that disrupt normal global trade. China opposes trade protectionism and has enacted measures to uphold trade liberalization, maintaining high standards in its opening policies. This approach is fundamental to China's national development and has significantly contributed to its economic achievements over the past decades. China's economic growth is intertwined with the global landscape, and the international community's prosperity increasingly relies on China's participation.
Launched in 2018 under President Xi Jinping's leadership, the CIIE was the world's first large-scale national expo dedicated to imports. Since then, six CIIEs have taken place, garnering considerable acclaim and participation from international exhibitors. The upcoming 7th CIIE is anticipated to be even larger. In a context marked by regional conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and uncertain post-pandemic economic recovery, hosting an exposition focused on openness, resource sharing, and mutual benefit is essential for both China and the world.
The CIIE serves as a platform for inviting global countries to engage in practical collaboration through friendly exchanges. This year, the event is expected to draw participants from 152 countries and regions, with guest countries of honor including France, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan. Furthermore, 39 government trade missions and four industry trade missions, totaling 780 trade sub-missions, will participate in the 7th CIIE—setting a new record. By facilitating international procurement, investment promotion, cultural exchange, and open collaboration, the CIIE enhances extensive cooperation with global exhibitors and plays a significant role in China's high-standard opening up.
Previous CIIEs have yielded remarkable collaborative results, strengthening ties between Chinese and foreign exhibitors. The Ministry of Commerce reports that the first six CIIEs showcased over 350,000 products, including nearly 2,500 new products, technologies, and services, resulting in over $420 billion in intended transactions. Many foreign companies have established a presence in China through the CIIE, setting up stores, factories, and R&D centers while partnering with Chinese firms. Building on past achievements, the 7th CIIE aims to attract leading enterprises across various sectors, expanding its global engagement. Notably, according to Tang Wenhong, assistant minister of commerce, a record 297 Fortune 500 and industry-leading companies will participate this year. With China's vast market as a backdrop, the CIIE seeks to drive global economic collaboration and establish itself as a crucial platform for foreign trade.
The 7th CIIE will highlight new quality productive forces by showcasing a variety of innovative products, technologies, and services. This focus aligns with China's economic strategy and reflects a core competitive advantage for companies worldwide. Exhibitors will display cutting-edge offerings, many of which will debut globally or in China. For the first time, a dedicated section for new materials will spotlight enterprises and products from high-end manufacturing, including electronic materials, biomaterials, and specialty materials. The automotive sector will feature new industries such as autonomous driving, low-altitude economy, and advanced energy storage vehicles. Through the CIIE, China aims to build a collaborative platform for new quality productive forces, promoting high-quality, coordinated growth for economies around the world.
The CIIE demonstrates China's commitment to trade liberalization, the expansion of high-standard opening up, and active participation in global economic governance. China aspires to make the CIIE a new window for international engagement and a platform for global trade, sharing the benefits of open development and free trade with the world, and contributing positively to global economic prosperity and growth.
