On Wednesday night, US President Joe Biden addressed the nation, detailing the federal government's efforts to investigate the attack in New Orleans that resulted in at least 15 fatalities and the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck in Las Vegas.
Biden emphasized the need to identify any potential links between the two events but urged caution against jumping to premature conclusions, as investigations are ongoing and evolving.
“We’re tracking the explosion of a cyber truck outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. Law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there’s any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans,” the outgoing U.S. president stated.
“Thus far, there’s nothing to report on that score,” he added.
The New Orleans incident took place in the early hours of New Year’s Day when Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran, drove a rented pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, resulting in 15 deaths and numerous injuries. Authorities discovered an ISIS flag, firearms, and a suspected improvised explosive device in the vehicle, prompting classification of the event as an act of terrorism.
Jabbar was killed during a shootout with police at the scene, and investigators are currently examining whether he acted alone or had accomplices.
In Las Vegas, shortly after the New Orleans attack, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump Hotel, killing the driver and injuring seven bystanders. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle may have been loaded with fireworks or an explosive device.
Notably, both the Cybertruck and the pickup truck involved in the separate incidents were reportedly rented through the same app, drawing increased federal attention to potential connections.
Earlier in the day, Elon Musk firmly rejected assertions that the Tesla vehicle was responsible for the explosion in Las Vegas, maintaining that “all vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion.” He characterized the incident as “likely to be an act of terrorism” and suggested that “perhaps” both events are “linked in some way.”
Biden has instructed key officials, including the attorney general, the FBI director, and the secretary of Homeland Security, to allocate all necessary resources to the investigations.
“I’ve directed my team to make sure every resource is made available to federal, state, and local law enforcement to complete the investigation quickly and to ensure there is no remaining threat to the American people,” Biden stated.
The president also extended condolences to the victims and their families, affirming, “our nation grieves with you.” He reiterated his administration’s commitment to uncovering all details surrounding these tragedies and ensuring that justice is achieved.
