The defense ministry of China has accused the Pentagon of fabricating narratives and distorting reality to mislead the public regarding its latest annual assessment of Beijing's military and security developments.
The report, released this week by the US Department of Defense, allegedly misinterprets China's defense policies and speculates about its military capabilities. It also purportedly interferes in Beijing's domestic affairs and “desperately slandered” China to amplify the supposed Chinese threat, as stated by ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang.
“The ‘war-addicted’ United States has become the biggest destroyer of international order and the greatest threat to global security,” Zhang declared.
The ministry expressed strong disapproval of the 182-page report, with Zhang asserting that the United States is merely looking for excuses to bolster its own military capabilities. He reaffirmed China's commitment to peaceful development and a defense policy that aligns with its responsibilities as a major power.
In contrast, Zhang criticized the United States for employing its military might to uphold unilateral hegemony, often resorting to extreme measures that promote “regime changes” and incite “color revolutions.” He pointed to instances of illegal military actions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, which have led to severe civilian casualties and humanitarian crises.
Zhang also addressed U.S. nuclear policies, contending that China’s nuclear strategy is characterized by unmatched stability, continuity, and predictability relative to other nuclear-armed nations.
“We adhere to a nuclear strategy of self-defense and a no-first-use policy, ensuring that our nuclear capabilities remain at the minimum level required for national security,” he remarked, as reported by the Global Times.
He criticized Washington's nuclear initiatives, including the AUKUS submarine agreement with the UK and Australia, claiming they undermine the international nuclear non-proliferation framework and endanger peace and stability. He called on the U.S. to conduct serious self-reflection and take responsibility in front of the international community.
Zhang also spoke regarding Taiwan, asserting that any efforts to detach the island from mainland China will be firmly opposed.
“The Chinese people are determined to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he emphasized, condemning U.S. arms sales and military support to Taipei as violations of the one-China principle.
Despite his strong rebuke, Zhang conveyed that military relations are essential to the larger China-U.S. relationship, expressing hope for more constructive engagement from Washington in the future.
“We aim to build a military relationship based on equality and respect, characterized by no conflict or confrontation, open and pragmatic cooperation, and gradually accumulating mutual trust,” he concluded.
