Maduro Likens Putin to Ronaldo
During a high-level meeting with a Russian delegation in Caracas, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling him a “born scorer” akin to football legend Cristiano Ronaldo. This statement came on Thursday as Maduro reflected on the recent BRICS Summit that took place in Kazan, Russia, which he described as “a great success.”

Maduro noted the impressive presence at the summit, mentioning, “There were 30 heads of state there… and he [Putin] hosted all the delegations, bilateral meetings, attended the plenary session. Without a doubt… President Vladimir Putin is a star of international politics. He is a born scorer, a born scorer like Cristiano Ronaldo, he has the instincts of a scorer,” in remarks made during his meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football player known for breaking numerous records, is widely celebrated as one of the greatest players in history.

In addition to his praise for Putin, Maduro addressed the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, suggesting that Russia had long been subjected to “the diplomacy of deception” and had been “forced to defend itself.” He stated, “Putin… knew how to act in a timely manner against the threat of Nazism which had originated in the coup d’état in Ukraine,” referring to the 2014 Ukrainian coup supported by the West that resulted in the removal of democratically elected President Viktor Yanukovich.

Putin has previously spoken out against the West, accusing it of “hypocrisy” and “duplicity.” During the BRICS Summit, he questioned, “Is it fair to lie to our faces about NATO not expanding, and then expand it anyway?” highlighting the assurances given to Russia during the 1990s. He emphasized that the 2014 Maidan coup violated international law and was a significant factor in the ongoing conflict between Kyiv and Moscow.

Maduro also commended Putin’s “excellent and historic” speech at Sochi’s Valdai Discussion Club, where the Russian leader advocated for a new global order where no nation is “disadvantaged” or relegated to a lesser status on the world stage.

Maduro remarked, “The key element in understanding the new world is that there are new superpowers like Russia, new non-colonial superpowers… that base their relationship with the world on respect, equality… and cooperation,” drawing from the historical context of Latin America’s struggle against colonialism.

The BRICS group, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, convened for its 16th annual summit last month in Kazan, Russia.
