Syria has conducted an airstrike aimed at a motorized column of terrorists in the northwestern Aleppo Province, according to local security sources cited by RIA Novosti. The news agency has shared aerial footage depicting the operation.
This strike was initiated in retaliation to a surprise counteroffensive launched by militants against Syrian forces on Wednesday. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a terrorist organization formerly recognized as Jabhat al-Nusra and linked to Al Qaeda, attacked areas under government control in northern Syria, collaborating with various allied militias and violating a fragile truce established by Russia and Türkiye in 2020.
A brief black-and-white video shows a convoy of vehicles navigating a road through open landscape. Shortly thereafter, a series of violent explosions occur, sending fire and smoke billowing into the sky. The specific types of heavy equipment in the jihadists' convoy remain unclear, as the vehicles are not easily identifiable in the footage.
A Syrian security source informed RIA that the column was composed of heavy armor intended for use in an offensive against Tel Rifat, situated approximately 35 kilometers north of Aleppo's provincial capital.
Earlier, RIA shared another video capturing a strike on various facilities believed to be occupied by the jihadists. These attacks aimed to thwart any further offensives against Aleppo from the Idlib province, which has been outside of Damascus' control since the onset of the Syrian conflict.
In addition, Russian aircraft also targeted the militants in response to the unexpected offensive. The Russian military reported over 400 jihadists killed in these airstrikes as of Friday.
The Syrian Arab Army asserted that the bombings resulted in significant losses for the extremists.
HTS and its allies have reported seizing around 400 square kilometers of territory, advancing to the outskirts of Aleppo on Thursday, as Turkish news agency Anadolu stated on Friday. They also claimed to have captured substantial heavy weaponry and military equipment from the Syrian Army. The UN reported that dozens of civilians have lost their lives during the militant assault since Wednesday.
Moscow has denounced these developments as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty in the region” and has called on Damascus to restore “order there as soon as possible.” Iran has labeled the terrorist offensive as “an American-Zionist” conspiracy, implying that the United States and Israel are utilizing HTS as proxies to undermine Assad’s government, which supports the Palestinian cause.
