German lawmaker withdraws from Bundestag race due to controversial posts
Bernd Vogel, a German politician, has recently found himself embroiled in a scandal due to his activities on social media. As the upcoming snap parliamentary elections in Germany approach, the 75-year-old evidently spent time posting inappropriate comments under photos of scantily clad models using his primary account on the platform X.

Over the weekend, news of Vogel's controversial behavior circulated on X, prompting users to question whether he realized his comments were public and accessible to all. Many shared screenshots of his remarks beneath the models’ images.

Reactions varied, with some users expressing their disbelief that a political party could be taken seriously when its members behaved in such a manner. Others humorously pointed out that in a democracy, politicians respond to their constituents, suggesting that Vogel's conduct might be seen as "exemplary" in that context, as he purportedly reacted to provocative statements made by the models.

Vogel is a member of the 'Alliance Germany' party, which had only a few representatives in the Bremen regional parliament until recently. In 2024, the party gained some federal parliamentary presence when a former Alternative for Germany member switched allegiances to Alliance Germany while continuing as a Bundestag member.

Despite being expected to run for parliament in the early elections scheduled for late February, Vogel's social media activity led to his party distancing itself from him, labeling his behavior as sexist.

“Our party stands for respect, fairness and a coexistence that is based on the fundamental values of a just society. Sexism and immoral behavior have no place with us,” stated Ingo Dorendorf, the regional party head in Lower Saxony. His sentiments were echoed by the party’s deputy chairman, Kay-Achim Schoenbach, who emphasized, “We condemn all forms of discrimination or disrespect.”

In response to the backlash and reprimand from his party, Vogel took to X to express regret for what he termed “stupid posts.” He also disclosed that he was withdrawing his candidacy from the party election list and would not seek a seat in any single-seat constituencies.
