Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara announced the investigation on Tuesday following a report by Israeli Channel 12 last week. “An investigation should be opened into suspicions of witness harassment and obstruction of justice regarding the findings of the Uvda show,” she stated.
“The rule of law applies to everyone,” Baharav-Miara emphasized. “We will thoroughly investigate any attempts to interfere with the judicial process.”
The report from Channel 12 included WhatsApp messages that suggested Sara Netanyahu had directed a former aide to orchestrate protests against political rivals and to intimidate a crucial witness, according to AP.
The corruption trial of Prime Minister Netanyahu began in 2020 and involves allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust related to influence peddling and the acceptance of improper gifts. Netanyahu has consistently denied these allegations, asserting that they are part of a politically motivated campaign against him.
During a meeting with his Likud Party on Thursday, the prime minister defended his wife, stating, “These accusations are yet another baseless attack on my family."
Sara Netanyahu has previously encountered legal challenges; in 2019, she accepted a plea deal in which she acknowledged misusing public funds for private catering expenses. As part of that deal, she was required to repay the funds along with an additional fine.
