The head of the UN health agency narrowly escaped danger during an Israeli airstrike at the airport in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on Thursday.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Ghebreyesus was in the war-torn nation to negotiate the release of UN personnel held by Houthi rebels who control the area. As the UN team was preparing to board their flight, Israeli jets targeted the airport.

Security footage shared by Ghebreyesus depicts him being swiftly evacuated by his team from the airport lounge, while another clip captures an explosion at a control tower.

“It was very chaotic. People were in disarray and running everywhere and no shelter: we were completely exposed,” Ghebreyesus recounted to reporters after his return to Switzerland on Saturday, as noted by AFP.

“It’s a matter of luck. Otherwise, if the missile deviated just slightly, it could have been on our heads... my colleague actually said after all that, we escaped death narrowly.”

In a message shared on X, Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude for the support he received. “I’m especially grateful to the colleagues and airport staff, who were selfless as they tried to protect me,” he stated.

Julien Harneis, the UN’s coordinator for Yemen, reported that one UN worker suffered shrapnel injuries, noting, “I saw his blood on the tarmac this morning as we said goodbye to Tedros,” he mentioned on Friday.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the airstrikes were carried out in retaliation for missile attacks from the Houthis on Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities. The IDF alleged that the Houthis were using Yemen's airport and seaports to smuggle arms from Iran.
