US held captive to Israel's interests, says NATO member
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that Washington's alignment with Israel has become "an accepted fact of life," highlighting the effectiveness of Israel's lobbying efforts in the US political landscape.

In a recent interview with TRT, Fidan discussed the impact of a recent Israeli airstrike in Beirut that led to the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. He expressed concern that Türkiye's fears regarding the escalation of the Middle East conflict beyond Gaza have materialized.

Fidan remarked, “In other words, we said that if Israel is not stopped, it will carry this war to other places... It seems that there is a serious desire in Israel, among [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu and his team, to expand the war to the region, and they are trying to advance this.”

He accused the US of overlooking Israel’s actions and claimed that “Zionism has taken root in American politics.” He continued, saying, “The fact that the entire power of the American state has been transformed into a structure that serves Israel… is no longer a disturbing issue here, but has become an accepted fact of life. This, of course, makes sane Americans incredibly uncomfortable."

Fidan noted that many US politicians feel compelled to maintain the status quo in foreign policy to remain part of the political system, lamenting their “despair.”

He added that Nasrallah was “an important figure in the region” and acknowledged that “the void left by his absence will be difficult to fill.”

Turkey has been vocal in its criticism of Israel’s response to Hamas’s unexpected assault last October, which resulted in significant devastation in Gaza. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has drawn parallels between Netanyahu and Adolf Hitler, and he condemned the airstrike on Beirut as a “massacre” that “no person of conscience can accept.”

In the wake of Nasrallah’s assassination, US President Joe Biden reiterated America's support for Israel, asserting that the US “fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah” and other groups linked to Iran. He characterized Nasrallah’s death as “a measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians.”
